Today I'm getting back to Grandpa's journal. The last entry I made was from August 11, 1943. For some unknown reason, he took a break and didn't add anything for over a year. His journal picks up in October, 1944, so this is where I start today.
Sat Oct 7th-Yes, John was here in '43 also last two weeks of Aug of 1944. Sorry to have missed all the time. Owing to severe dry weather sprinkling was forbidden for a few wees as our wells were getting low. Quite a lot of water was used up to 132,000 gal daily. Now I hope to continue this diary in the future.
We are having fine weather, have had no killing frost and light frost on only two mornings, up to this writing. Victory gardens are still producing vegetables.
Family is represented in armed forces by one son and three sons-in-low. At present S/Sgt Donald is in Corsica. Cpl Eugene Crauder is in France, PFC Frank V(irgil) Keltner, Jr. is in Camp Hood, Texas. Pvt Leonard Eugene Brock is in Camp Meade,Md. preparatory for over seas work. More tomorrow
Sun Oct 8th-Roof and woodwork and contents except boiler were destroyed last night in a building owned by Hammond Canning Co., about $18,000 loss. No cause found. Rather cool today 46 degrees, somewhat windy. Attended S.S. and Church this AM, Cora and family and Sarah and her 2 sons eat dinner with us today.
Will finish pumping a little early today. Farmers are still hauling water on account of dry wells at home. Arthur Gilbert got 100 gal today.
Oct 10th-Well! Well! I forgot yesterday, had too much to do. Helped Charles take down Miss Clara Smith's old boiler after supper. The air feels as if there is frost nearby. Thermometer did not rise much today 43 to 51. Flushed fire hydrants on S. Main, Dewey, W. Oak, and corner South and Summit St. Mains need flushing very much. That's enough today.
Wed Oct 11th-Picked pears this AM at Edith Sebrings. twp baskets for each of us.
Boiler inspector A. R. Will inspected boiler #1 (east) found it OK and commended me for condition of boiler and setting.
Flushed fire hydrants of W. Dayton St. Entered into the realms of the Kiwanis Club last night and was welcomed as their newest member.
Word was received by Catherine (Woodard) Bishop that her husband Ralph had been killed inaction Sept 15, '44.
Oct 12th-Assisted Charles last night in getting some plumbing done. Worked till about 10 PM. Finished fire hydrants on W. 2nd St all OK. Received letter from Donald in Corsica in which he says he is physical OK but is about to be transferred to another branch which doesn't sound so good.
Oct 13th-Assisted Charles again last night. Started pumps this AM and flushed fire hydrants on E and W 2nd st, all E & W 3rd St and extreme north end of Main St all OK except on at 2nd & Sight Feed alley.
Went to Lewisburg after dinner and had Charles T Schreel cut & thread a 2 1/2" pipe for Miss Smiths heating plant.
Miss Maude Clemmer had a leak in faucet of lavatory, she was quite flushed about it. Yet this is Friday 13th Huh!
Weather is dry and quite cool yet no killing frost. Oh that's enough for today, OK?
Oct 14th-Again assisted Charles at Miss Smith's last night. Jim Robins has a leak of 5 gal per min.
The home of Jesse Hasten (deceased) and his personal property was sold at auction today, house & lot brought $6000 and other property sold high.
Had a new customer for water today. Hubert Kreitzer began hauling, water is getting lower all the time.
Oct 15th-Sunday up early to look after the Church. Fair attendance, sang two old favorite hymns. Weather cool 34-57-may frost heavy tonight. Had two farmer water customers today. I may go to the show tonight. Through pumping rather early, less water used.
Oct 16th-Yes it froze last night first killing frost or freeze of season. Thermometer reading at station was 23F.
Leak at Joe Robbins was caused by pipe breaking off in tee.
Sold 2350 gal of water to farmers today, wells are very low in county.
Yes I saw the show (On Way To Tokio) at Look Theatre last night, it was good. That's all for today.
Oct 17th-Temperature 27-71 but a fine day. Village is putting tar or oil on some alleys and streets, some sure need it.
Quite a bit of water has gone out today to farmers, about 1450 gal. Another new customer (Forest Bell) I guess I better stop for today.
Oct 18th-Temperature 28-76 another fine day. And farmers continuing to haul water. But no rain to bring up the wheat which has been sown for over 2 weeks.
Well diary I feel punk arms, legs, back and everything just aches, has for several days and I hope it lets up soon.
It's about time to quit and supper is about ready so, so long until tomorrow.
Oct 19th-Temperature 41-63 another fine day but still dry weather, forecast wanted rain, but nothing came. A prayer might help. Farmers hauled 2400 gal today.
That's all for today except I put some wood in basement ready for winter.
Oct 20th-Temp 40-55-Cooler & cloudy all day, no rain. Farmers hauled 1000 gal today.
Youngsters are already out at night, can't wait until Oct 31st.
Well it is 5:50 and almost through pumping with corn bread waiting for supper M-M-M
Sat Oct 21st-Temp 37-58 cool & part cloudy. Farmers hauled 2750 gal today.
Forgot to mention John Tebelman (68) died sometime Wed night found dead in bed by his brother Herman.
Opened sewer at Dick Spaulding, Scott Williams property, the old (Opera House) this AM, also ata Jim Hamilton's res. Sewer was stopped up at Russell Hall's (old John E Davis home). I refused to do. The reason is better kept quiet. Well it is Saturday night. So long.
Oct 22nd-Temperature 31-56-cool but fine day. Farmers hauled 880 gal today. Up at 5:30 this morning and just finished work at 7 PM. Took care of church this morning, attended Sunday School & Church Services this AM. Ate a bite and pumped till 1:45 PM then attended the funeral of John Tebelman who was 68 yrs 8 mo & 11 days old when he died. Tat leaves only Herman and a niece Lucile Becker LaBach.
Then I pumped some more till tank was full.

Oct 23rd-Temp 20-64, pretty cool. Clothes froze hanging on the line. Farmers hauled about 1700 gal. Raked and burned some leaves this PM. I guess that's all today.
Oct 24th-Temp 44-72 fine day. Henry Busch 80 died last night. Farmers hauled 1450 gal today.
Oct 25th-Temp 34-74 fine day but dry. Arthur Gilbert hauled two hundred gal today, Kinsey 250 gal. Attended Kiwanis last evening, honor court of Boy Scouts was held in connection. Sons George E., Jr became a 2nd class scout and Harry E a first class and was appointed assistant Scout Master.
Received a letter from Donald that he was demoted from S/Sgt to private. I fear Donald has done something amiss. I must write to him about it.
Well I had five teeth pulled by Dr. Good today, it makes me feel kinda funny. So long.
Oct 26th-Temp 34-58 fine day, cool and no rain. Attended Henry Busch funeral this PM. Had pumped a little this morning, pumped out sewer line at Chris Wigger (Wm Lanthrop) place AM, helped it some. Tom Myers has spladid force at meter but not much in house. Arthur Gilbert was the only farmer to haul water today, 200 gal, paid for 100 didn't have enough change.
Well I feel a little punk today, ache in my arms and legs and now have a little headache. I've been wondering what those aches mean.

Oct 27th-Temp 30-55? fine cool day. Pumpage 64,800 gal. 350 gal for farmers, reset Derby, Keyes & Haber meters. Stills some aches in my body, also my teeth. Good night.
October 28th-Temperature 24-68-cool windy. Farmers broke record for water hauling, over 3700 gal, several new customers.
Had my hair cut today but that doesn't ease the pain of my body.
Dug up the few gladioli bulbs we had in the garden. I still have the plan to mop so I better stop. Good night.
Oct 29th-Temp 28-54 cool but fine day. Farmers hauled about 975 gal, one new customer.
Received a letter from Donald last night in which he had enclosed a citation form the French Government on the Croix de Guerre avec Palme which he and his comrades had received for their part in this great war. Mary was out for just a little while today. This is sufficient for today.
Oct 30th-Temp 20-61 Water to farmers 2150 gal.
Oct 31st-Reformation Day, Charles birthday-33. Temp 28-72 Water to farmers 1150 gal. Board of Public Affairs met last night, routine business was all the was done. Filled east boiler, ready for tomorrow's change. That will do for today, hope to dine with the Kiwanis tonight.
This finishes the October, 1944 entry. Tomorrow I will start on November. I promise to be more regular with blogging from now on.
