Today I'm continuing Grandpa's journal with November, 1944.
Nov 1st-Temp 49-73 South wind warmer. Farmer hauled about 900 gal today. Enjoyed Kiwanis last evening. Raked and burned leaves at station AM & PM. Tied 1 1/2" meter which was in line at Canning Factory and it seems to have gotten too hot. Good night.
Nov 2nd-Temp 51-75 warm south wind. No rain. Farmers hauled 1600 gal today.
I raked and burned more leaves today, not much time in the afternoon.
A man was killed just east of town last night by a car driven by Miss Grace Meyer. H seemed either drunk or doped. Good night.
Nov 3rd-Temp 42-75 another fine day but no rain. Farmers hauled 1450 gal today.
Finished raking leaves today until more fall, put them over in field north of station.
Finally got the radio repaired but haven't had time to try it.
Nov 4th-Temp 44-54 a little rain last night & early morning. Did a lot of good for wheat. Farmers hauled 1500 gal. Attended Junior Mission Bank meeting in which Donald, a former Mission Lander, was honored.
Nov 5th Sunday-Temperature was 37-40 and down to 35 at 5:30 PM. Farmers hauled 900 gal today. Weather was cloudy and windy, cool.
Heard "The Lutheran Hour" today with some interruption on account of farmers hauling water. We ate a combined birthday dinner at Esther's, Elmer being 62 today and Mother, my Mary E., was 52 yesterday.
Well I finished the book "The Strange Woman" and you sure have various emotions during the reading thereof and I finished with this thought "Be you steadfast".
Nov 6th-Temp 16-44. Farmers only hauled 400 gal today. Weather cold slight wind, partly cloudy.
Mrs. Sidney Shaffer reported a leak in street in front of their house. Must be in service line. Tomorrow is election day, will report on that on Wednesday.
Nov 7-Temp 28-? Election Day was in election board of North Precinct. T. J. Stewart pumped for me.
Nov 8-Temp 45-58 Was tired from my work yesterday. It tried to rain today but couldn't make it. Farmers hauled 2200 gal today.
President Roosevelt was re-elected. Preble Co reported republican. State mixed.
Nov 9-Temp 48-56 And we had a very nice rain although we need very much more. Only 600 gal of water went out today.
Measured flow of water from wells today, south well raised water 79" off of ground with a stronger flow than last Thursday.
According to last reports Preble Co went republican except Dwight Emrich as clerk of courts. I was glad for Dwight.
Nov 10-Temp 40-45 Cloudy today with a drizzle now & then. 1200 gal went to farmers today, the little rain & cool weather keeps stock from drinking so much.
Another leak showed up today on Smith St in front of Grace Meyer double formerly G. W. Ehlers barn.
A Mr. Wampler 3 W 2nd St was struck by auto driven by Carl Fritz near Hotel Alexandria & died a few hours later, this happened yesterday morning. Mother doesn't feel so hot today.
Nov 11-Temp 40-43 Armistice Day but not much different than any other day this year, too much war now. The farmers hauled 1250 gal today, one new one. Had Charles to lay a new blow off valve for east boiler (#2) betting others leak.
Nov 12 Sunday-Temp 39-52 Partly cloudy. Communion at church morning & evening.
Nov 13-Temp 27-52 Fine day if part cloudy. raked some leaves at station, hope this to be the last time this fall, still have some to rake up. Farmers hauled 1250 gal today.
Nov 14-Temp 41-49 (eve 52)-Nice rain this AM cloudy & fog PM. More rain forecast for tomorrow. Farmers hauled 1000 gal today.
Assisted Charles in installing a deep well electric pump at Charles Eby's home.
Nov 16-Temp 41-44 And is now falling, expect it to be cold in the morning. We had more rain last night and some snow fell. Glad I burned the leaves last night. Can't find any one to dig, am getting through rather early today. Well good night.
Nov 17-Temp 31-38 Rather cold cloudy but nice day to work. Farmers hauled 1300 gal today, one new one Marcus Peters. This being the first day of hunting law, boys of upper classes and some of the teachers went hunting. So I used Harry to dig out the service ls house lot #217 which had a hole almost 3/16" in dia., quite a lot of water was lost. We repaired with an entire new pipe (3/4" galvanized).
At home Charles Crauder finished papering Wilbur's room, it looks rather nice.
Nov 18-Temp 31-35 Cool today. Farmers hauled 1500 gal today. Yesterday hunting law came in but there doesn't seem to be an abundance of game. Emerson Voge killed a fox, these seem to be getting quite numerous for safety of our poultry.
Nov 19-Temp 33-37 And rain all afternoon, not heavy, by steady drizzle. Farmers hauled 600 gal.
Mother & Harry went with Charles and his family to see Grandma & Pa McGregor.
Had a visitor in person of Orville Jeffries and from his conversation I must class him as a man with a vision. I hope something comes from his ideas.
Nov 20-Temp 32-38 Now getting colder, had a good snow storm last night, some snow still on building & ground this morning. Also had rain last night & this AM. Only 500 gal of water went out today.
Stanley Bortner inquired for himself & Tom Crank about sanitary sewers for their properties.
Nov 21-Temp 34-40 Cool and cloudy, good rain last night. No water hauled today, first for quite a while, cleaned sewer for Ewalts helping Charles out, filled with roots. That is all for now.
Nov 22-Temp 24-36 Quite cool threatening snow or cold rain. Farmers hauled 1650 gal today.
Attended Kiwanis last night. Pvt Charles Wills and our new druggist Mr Ullman and a Mr. Rookstool were guests.
Then attended (with others of the family) the class play given by the Senior Class of our High School, it sure was fine, much credit given to Rev. Eugene Beekley, their coach.
Have several sewer connections on the go now.
Nov 23-THANKSGIVING DAY!!! Temp 32-34 cloudy, little rain and spit snow once in a while. Farmers took but 700 gal today.
All children were home today except Versae and the boys in service. May they have thankful hearts as they partake of the Lord's blessings.
Attended the services at the Reformed Church when Rev E J Beekley preached the sermon last night, and this morning at our church when Rev Bradow illustrated his talk b y drawing the head of Christ with crayon. No adjective can describe what effect this had on many of us who heard and saw him.
So let us give thanks and pray for the peace which passeth all understanding.
Nov 24-Temp 24-40 cool, partly cloudy.
Harry and I repaired leak on Smith St in front of Grace Meyer property, put a skimmer clamp on it. 1750 gal of water went to farmers. Wm. Koeller started to dig for Millands water tap.
Nov 25-Temp 27-38 raw wind-partly cloudy. 1850 gal hauled of water to farmers. Leonard Crowell hauled two loads of sand for filter beds at disposal plant.
Too busy to write any more.
Nov 26-Temp 36-47 Cloudy and rather damp day, no rain but it looks as if it would rain. Farmers hauled 1050 gal today.
Not much water used in town today, so am getting through rather early and am glad for I have a headache, so good night.
Nov 27-Temp 40-38 950 gal of water went out. Turned in $38.69 to clerk f or water sold to farmers.
Nov 28-Temp 31-39 1180 gal of water to farmers. Board met last night.
Today or this forenoon Mother & I assisted Esther & Elmer to move to their own house in New Lexington and I had a headache all day. Too many irons in the fire. That's enough for today.
Nov 29-Temp 34-38 700 gal went to farmers today. Assisted Charles in making sewer tap for Altha Pleasant. Did a little too much. Ladies night at Kiwanis tonight.
Nov 30-Temp 20-23 & windy making the weather disagreeable. 1050 gal of water went to farmer today. At Millards we are digging to make a new tap.
Last night my wife and I attended ladies night at Kiwanis, good attendance. Boss Johnson was the speaker Lt Geo *** and wife were present.
