This is the last entry from Grandpa Winkelman's journal.  I'd appreciate it if anyone knows of an earlier or later journal that I can add to this blog.

March 1-Temp 26-40 Pretty much like a lamb.  I hope it continues so.   Only 450 gallons today, also short run for standpipe.
I have a headache so goodnight.

March 2nd-Temp 41-44 Cloudy AM rain all PM.  No water to farmers today.  Connected toilets at church to main sewer line this A.M.  May work a little there tonight.

March  3rd-Temp 53-42 and getting colder.  400 gal went out today.  Did work at church last night connecting the lavatory to drain.  From yesterday's rain the Ohio river is above flood stage and still rising at Cincinnati.

March 4th-Temp 28-50 A mighty fine day.  No water out today.  Only pumped 56,000 today.
Had two visitors  today, John my brother and John Bowers both engineers.  Will visit my sister at New Lexington now.

March 5th-Temp 44-58 Cloudy but warm and at this writing at 7:15 PM we are having lightning and thunder with rain, first of it's kind in months.
Wm. Koehler dug out service line for Grace Meyer property on Smith St.  Two more leaks in it will replace galvanized pipe with copper, our first venture.

March 6th-Temp 50-47 & getting colder now, rained most last night and today, up to noon more than three inches of rain had fallen and still coming.  Ohio river at Cincinnati was around 65 ft., Old Twin is up but not out of banks as yet maybe in a few hours.  Did not get to work on copper pipe.  Well Kiwanis tonight so goodnight.  400 gal out today.

March 7th-Temp 8-31 considerable cooler and rather an even temperature.  No water out today.    Finished work on replacing galvanized pipe with copper, used 19"-6" copper pipe connected to old corporation cock but used new curb cock.  It worked fine.  Wm. Koehler filled ditch and worked down at disposal plant this P.M.
   Lenten services tonight so goodnight.

March 8th-Temp 26-38 A fine day, partly cloudy, cool.  It looks as if the farmers have their own water now, as it has been several days since anyone has hauled water.  I am thankful for it.   Had Wm. Koehler resand filter beds at disposal plant and I filled one of the beds with sludge.
Finished pumping early tonight.  I hope to go to Eaton to a 4H club gathering of leaders etc.

March 9th-Temp 23-46 Air was rather raw otherwise a fine day.
Today John would be 22 years old if he were living.
Dever's bar had a leak in their side of meter, quite a flow.  Charles repaired it.
Having trouble to find tap for Edna (Good) Spitler on west Dayton St for her sewer.

March 10th-Temp 32-50 Donald 25 today and wonder where he is.

March 11th-Temp 23-56 some nice fine day.
Jacob Kreitzer (71) was buried today funeral at Salem, did not get to pump until after 4 finished at 7.

March 12th-Temp 41-51 and raining, fine day except a little rain this AM which would not have been too much.  Assisted Charles at Ora Litzard in laying sanitary sewer.  Put in 22 ft.

March 13-Temp 25-56 fine day.  Not much to say.  No Kiwanis.  Inspected sewer at Edna (Good) Spitler.

March 14-Temp 28-65 fine again but rain promised for tomorrow.  Inspect sewer again for Edna (Good) Spitler.  Cleaned out roots on W South Street sewer.  Kiwanis tonight (farmers night).

March 15-Temp 46-61 "The Ides of March" and we had a little rain this PM (Nina and baby came home). Mother and I went to Richmond this AM bought a living room suite splurging ourselves. Then it was one of the cheapest.  Came back by way of "40" through Lewisburg visited the girls a little.

March 16-Temp 58-74 Warmer and sure fine day.  Worked at church this AM getting ready for the fellowship meeting tonight.

March 17-Temp 61-70 Fine day with rain in early morning.  Took Versae to U of Dayton for her nurses examination.
And today is St Patrick's day but I didn't see much wearing of the green.
Our neighbor Hattie Black was taken to the hospital this PM her condition is not good.  Forgot to say yesterday that Nina and Gary came home, they had been with Virgil's folks at Hamilton.

March 18-Temp 36-68 to 72 Nice day but too many were working in garden and yard for even if it was a nice day it was also Sunday.  I believe it is preparing to rain some more.  Quite a few persons were out walking today.  About 14 persons were at the station during the afternoon.

March 19-Temp 59-70 quite a bit of rain fell both morning and afternoon.  Wm Koehler and I did get most of the form in for the blowoff pit.
Versae 18 today, they are growing up.  I better quit and get home before it rains again.

March 20-Temp 57-61 fairly constant, but intermittent rain throughout the day, local streams are up and the Ohio is again on the rise.
Charles and I expect to go to meeting of Southwestern Ohio Sewage Conference at Dayton disposal plant tonight.  That's all.

March 21-Temp 40-36-47 A little variation, with rain most of day and a flake of snow now & then and at one time sleet.  Now it is clearing.  Attended the Sewage Conference at Dayton last night, heard several good addresses and received some knowledge which will be to our advantage.
   Lenten services tonight.

March 22-Temp 31-51-56 Almost clear today yet cool.
Received a letter from Donald and he has changed camp and group. At present he is at Mitchell Field N.Y.

March 23rd-Temp 36-66 another fine day.  Did a little work for Charles this AM
Received a card from Nina in which Virgil's address is changed with an A.P.O. number & N.Y. post office so he must also be on the way out.  There are rumors of a break in Germany.  I hope it will be true for 12 years ago tomorrow Hitler became dictator.

March 24-Temp 53-64 Fine day and nothing spectacular in Germany.  Took up floor in kitchen of church last night, it won't be enough.
Sold truck to Charles today for 300.00 for a new boiler and stoker.

March 25-Temp 44-81 Very warm today but a fine one.  A sad day in our family.  Geo. Carico left his wife Cora and their five children for some other female. (This part of the entry was blacked out)
God grant that Cora does not lose faith in Him who doth all things best.

March 26-Temp 55-61 Some rain otherwise fine.  Esther 62 today.  Worked at church this A.M.  That will do for this book.  Will try and get a new one.  I hope I have offended no one with what I have written.

This ends the journal that Grandpa started in January, 1943  I hope this entertained you and given us all some insight into the man those of us who knew him loved and respected.

Rest in peace with God, Grandpa.

Today I start the entries for 1945.  Some of them are more involved than his earlier entries.  He starts with an inspirational thought.

May the peace that passeth all understanding keep our hearts and mind in Christ Jesus through
  1945

Jan 1st- Temperature decidedly lower 17-15 and a wind blowing the snow which fell last night.  Not many (93) attended our services last night but it was an inspiring service.
The new year starts out with 1400 gal to farmers.  The sick at home and Charles and Cora are about the same.  Joan is improving.

Jan 2nd-Temp 4 below 0 to 11 cold quite a few pipes frozen.  Only 100 gal went to farmers today.  At home all seem to improve except Wilbur.  Mary J received a letter from T/5 Gene.  Could have done quite a bit of work but I had to turn it down.  I must treat them all alike.

Jan 3rd-Temp 19-29 not as bad but more snow predicted.  1550 gal of water today.  I thought for some time we would need to send water to New Lexington as a house owned by a Mr. French was on fire.  It was put out with the help of neighbors.  Quite a lot of furniture was broken in getting it out of the house.
At home all are improving except Wilbur.  Charles and Joan also.

Jan 4th-Temp 22-22 constant until evening then lower.  800 gal to farmers today.  Sarah 23 today.  Rev. Bradow called on Wilbur last night.
Committee took down the tree at the church last night.  I cleaned auditorium.  Folks at home improving slowly, mother not as well today as yesterday.  B of PH & school board conferred with coal deal relative to coal for water works & school decided to take run of mine.

Jan 5th-Temp 10-30 cloudy-it may snow.  1400 gal went out today, farmers say side roads are treacherous to drive on.
Put in new coil in furnace for Harry Lease also repaired lavatory drain for Mrs. Netta Fritz.  Folks at home and Charles are improving.  Received a letter from Donald, he seems to be anxious to get home now.  I hope he can soon.

Jan 6th-Temp 15-28 cloudy, forecast rain.  2000 gal to farmers today.
Saw basketball game Lewisburg vs West Alexandria, home boys beat by 28 to 26.  Well fought game.  Folks at home still improving.  I must get going so I can finish the church work.

Jan 7th-Temp 27-32 much ice some melting this P.M.  1300 gal went to farmers today.
Not many in church this morning, but the congregational meeting was held.  Chas. Guntle was elected elder.  Wm. Lange, Sr. and Herman Puvogel deacons, Earl Rink and Geo. Marker trustees.  The pastor's, janitor's and financial secretary's salaries were raised (vote 47-19).  Someone however was very emphatic in voting no as he made a very large cross X.
So from our services this morning we should remember Romans 12:1.  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.  Amen.

Jan 8th-Temp 20-26 Foggy, snow & colder weather predicted.  1350 gal went to farmers today, byroads are still icy.
At home, folks are improving except Versae seems to have it now.  No school until further notice.  What little we know!  So be thou my shepherd dear God and I shall not want.  Amen

Jan 9th-Temp 12-15 Evening getting colder, 1300 gal to farmers.  Improving at home,  Chas. drove to Greenville this PM for supplies.
Not much to say except that I hope God will remove the ice for us.

Jan 10th-Temp 11-26 And where sun hit on south side of roofs the snow melted which fell this morning, about 2" of it.  (About 1200 gal to farmers).  Assisted Charles at Mrs. Lucas after I shoveled snow at church.  Chas. doesn't gain strength very fast nor those at home either.
Nina called by telephone from or near Lampasa, Texas which is near Camp Hood.  They hope to be home next month.

Jan 11th-Temp 6 below 0 to 26 above br-r-r-r cold.  Took Sarah and her boys home last night and the water pipes were frozen, fortunately only one trap was burst.  Cora's baby "Stanley" was sick, they feared strep-throat.
Assisted Charles at Mrs. Lucas' again, he still is not ready for fire.  I nearly forgot only 600 gal went to farmers today.

Jan 12th-Temp 37-38 Warmer today some ice melted but this evening it is getting cooler.  I hope it stays warmer.  1800 gal of water to farmers today, one new one.  Charles finished Mrs. Lucas' boiler so he could build fire today.  It seems as if the flue bug has bit me now, nevertheless I would like to say with the psalmist, "Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Jehovah and teachest out of Thy law; That Thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked."  Psalm 94:12,13.

Jan 13-Temp 27-31 Fine temperature, cloudy.  Attended a public sale today, south & east of Johnsville, O., bought a sectional bookcase for Wilbur, did not get what I wanted however.  1300 gal want to farmers today.

Jan 17th-Temp 14-26 Cloudy and not a bad day.  I hope it moderates and removes the ice.  (900 gal today).  Good attendance at Kiwanis last evening.  today Charles changed return pipe on Mrs. Lucas boiler to prevent water from leaving boiler as the stoker run.  I am almost finished with my pumping so I must finish this 5-15 C.W.T.

Jan 18th-Temp 19-31 Cloudy and temperature rising so that snow was getting soft, forecast is for rain or more snow.  I hope rain.  Chas. found some of his trouble at Mrs. Lucas in stoker, everything seems to be working fine,  Had two new water customers, Clarence Eby and Ralph Martin.  Altogether 1750 gallons went to farmers today.

Jan 19th-Temp 25-29 Cloudy and spitting now so that about 1" has fallen today.  Charles and I worked on Derby's sewer but we put flexible rod up for 25 ft and still did not reach stoppage.  I hope we can open it tomorrow.

311 partook of the Lord's Supper in morning and evening services yesterday.  Only 47 in evening, should have been at least 100 more.
Good article John and Jane in Lutheran Youth as to the stand of the catholic church in regard to freedom of worship.  It is OK as long as it is for their church only.  God forbid.

Jan 23-Temp 19-31 Did a little thawing but not much, wind rising from southwest.  1450 gal to farmers.  Apparently we were hired as janitors again at the church with a 75.00 per yr increase.
   Kiwanis tonight so goodnight.

Jan 24-Temp 17-34  =Sun shone quite a lot and some more melted.  I hope it continues that way until the ice is gone (Only 200 gal today).  Kiwanis had about 100% attendance.  Lt Gov Larry Winchell of Greenville gave us some good pointers on "Kiwanis".
Reset the radiator of church this A.M, it had been taken moved to make room for the stairway which is now about finished.

Well this is a day to be remembered for Donald came home this morning, he sure surprised us and I don't know who is the most pleased he or us.  He sure looks swell, a little tanned.

A while back I had posted a picture of my Great-Grandparents, Eli and Anna McGregor.  At the time I had only individual pictures of them.  I had never seen a photo of the two of them together.  I asked that if anyone had any pictures of them, could they please send them to me.  A couple months ago I received this picture of them sent to me by my cousin Stanley's (Butch) son Troy.  I can't thank him enough for sending this to me.  If anyone has any other pictures of them, or any pictures of John and Sarah Winkelman, that they could send to me, I'd greatly appreciate it and gladly put them in a future blog.
So, any way, here is the only picture I have of Eli and Anna McGregor together.

Today I'm getting back to Grandpa's journal.  The last entry I made was from August 11, 1943.  For some unknown reason, he took a break and didn't add anything for over a year.  His journal picks up in October, 1944, so this is where I start today.
